Denya (3rd from right) at an Open Circle reflection circle, along with Marybeth and her new community of friends

When I started university, I was unsure of my place at McMaster. After a rocky high school experience due to the pandemic and personal struggles, moving out and living in residence was a big leap for me. I remember attending Welcome Week events and feeling like a small fish in a big pond. Everything was new, and while this was exciting, I didn’t feel a sense of belonging in the community at Mac.
One night in September, I found out about Open Circle’s Our Shared Stories panel event from Instagram. The event seemed nice, but I didn’t really want to go by myself, and it was easier to stay in my dorm. I don’t remember what changed my mind that night (it might have been my mum over the phone), but I went to the event and I’m glad I did.
At the panel, I listened to other students share their journey with Open Circle. It was a different experience, hearing strangers open up about their struggles and talk about how they’ve changed and grown. It was interesting to learn about other people on a deeper level. Each person was met with respect and treated each other kindly. The people sitting next to me were friendly and chatted with me, which helped me feel comfortable in the space. There was also a small group discussion activity where I got to share my own experiences. I felt eager to open up, and the kind and positive attitudes of the group made me feel seen and accepted. Although I felt a bit awkward at the start of the event, by the end I felt a sense of connection that I had been missing.
Since this event, I’ve attended reflection circles, participated in the Becoming Yourself Series, and joined the student leadership team. Now, as a fourth-year student, it’s hard to imagine my school experience without Open Circle. I’ve been part of many events and have learned about myself from reflection activities. I’ve made friends who are genuine, caring and kind. Through ups and downs, Open Circle continues to be a warm place where I feel welcome and at home. Currently, I’m looking forward to attending more reflection circles next semester.
