Zombies and SOC’s Youngest Donors

The children at Welcome Inn’s Learning And Fun (LAF) after school program recently made a donation to Student Open Circles! Our SOC volunteers tutor these children each week. They mentor them in a financial literacy program, where each child receives a weekly allowance and decides how much to save, spend, and give. At the end of the year, the children get to choose which charity to give to. The coordinator, Michelle, said the children were really excited when they learned they could pick Student Open Circles as their charity because it allowed them to give back to the mentors they love so much.

Along with loving the SOC volunteers, the LAF kids also love zombies. One week our volunteers taught them about mental health with an interactive zombie activity. The kids had to cure volunteers who had turned into zombies (with face paint) and were roaming the building. Other volunteers dressed up in white lab coats and were doctors leading a team of kids in finding clues with mental health questions and ingredients for the zombie cure. If the zombies found the kids, the kids had to sing at the zombies to put them to sleep and sneak past. Once the children had collected all the clues and ingredients, they made the cure and went around curing all the volunteers. The kids and our student volunteers had a frightfully phenomenal time.
