Volunteering makes me feel alive again

26-03 Retreat

By Kanglu Liu, Open Circle student

I've been a volunteer in Hamilton through Student Open Circles for two years, and I'm sure I'll keep doing this in the future because the experience is always special and I've become a better version of myself in the process.

SOC always cares about the feelings and thoughts of participants. Every time I join an activity, whether it's a weekly meeting or a volunteer group reflection, we always have meaningful discussions about our life and personal well-being. Whether as a volunteer or a student leader, I always feel that people in SOC care about our life. For example, at the beginning of the semester, we often talk about making friends and building relationships. While during exam period, we discuss managing anxiety. Such discussions always make me feel comforted and supported. It also inspires me to look around and spread such warmth to people in the community that I’m volunteering with.

Before I got involved in volunteering service, I always thought of it simply as helping others. However, during my two years helping adults with disabilities and children, I shifted my perspective. The adults with disabilities always share their stories and experiences, and our conversations are always enriching. The children are always energetic and lovely, making each interaction heartwarming. I gradually realized that weekly volunteering is not a task for me, but a source of healing. I remember our last volunteering before the end of the semester, I was so overwhelmed by my schoolwork. I seemed to feel like a robot that mechanically completes tasks. But after spending time with the kids and playing some simple games, I felt alive again. There are so many experiences like this, and I am always grateful that I joined SOC. I’m excited for more students to join and experience the warmth. Together, we will continue making a positive impact in our communities.
