Weekly Volunteer Teams
The Volunteer Action Program places teams of student volunteers at programs throughout Hamilton, such as children's tutoring programs, work with adults living with disabilities, homeless shelters, and environmental projects. Our current CVA groups are:
Adventures in Art (Welcome Inn Community Centre)
Mentoring and visual arts instruction for 11-14 year olds.
Afterschool Program and Clothing Exchange (Eva Rothwell Community Centre) - 4 Groups
Tutoring and games for ages 8-13, clothing exchange program.
Afterschool Program (HARRRP) - 2 Groups
Healthy snacks, homework help, and activities such as crafts, arts, physical activity, sports, and cooking for grades 6-8 youth.
Bennetto Classroom Support (Bennetto Public School) - 2 Groups
In classroom individual and group assistance, help with class preparation and administration tasks.
Conway (Conway Opportunity Homes, Inc)
Interact with people living with developmental disabilities.
Dr. Davey Breakfast Program (Beasley Community Centre) - 4 Groups
Engage children in positive conversation during breakfast, teaching respect, playing games, helping with cooking and clean up.
Family Night (Eva Rothwell Community Centre)
Play games, engage in crafts or sports, teach respect, provide movie and snacks for the whole family: age 1-14 & parents.
Homework Club (Eva Rothwell Community Centre)
Help at risk children with homework and literacy skills.
Homework Help Club (YMCA) - 2 Groups
Interact with recent immigrant youth, provide homework assistance, and organize fun and educational activities in the YMCA Youth Centre.
Inasmuch Women's Shelter (Mission Services) - 2 Groups
Facilitate crafts, games, and movies for infants and children
Learning and Fun (Welcome Inn Community Centre) - 5 Groups
Work with at risk kids in small groups and one-on-one using creative and fun tools to teach academics, and assist LAF coordinator with activities.
Pathways to Education (North Hamilton Community Health Centre) - 2 Groups
Academic tutoring and role-modeling to Gr. 9 students in a group environment where learning (through homework, projects, and other avenues) is preserved and appreciated.
Peer Support Program (ON March of Dimes)
Assisting adults with physical disabilities using augmentative and alternative communication devices, help to plan activities.
Reading Buddies (Frontier College)
One on one and group-based reading for high risk children and youth.
Seniors Program (Welcome Inn Community Centre)
Organizing, preparing, and serving lunch for seniors. Volunteers socialize with seniors over lunch hour and set up/clean up and participate in the afternoon activity.
Seniors Program (Shalom Village)
Visiting with residents, taking residents for tea/coffee, assisting during mealtimes (with feeding, etc.), reminiscing with residents, organizing games, cards, etc.
Wesley Centre Soup Kitchen (Wesley Urban Ministries)
Prepare and serve food to homeless people at a drop-in.
