What is Service Learning?

Doing + Talking = Learning

Student Open Circles uses a Service Learning model, where discussion and reflection is combined with action and service. Service Learning is integral to our Volunteer Action program. As well our discussion forums frequently introduce students to service experiences.

Service Learning gives students the opportunity to:

  • thoughtfully reflect on service experiences
  • develop a deeper understanding of issues
  • enhance their sense of community responsibility
  • meet real community needs
  • develop leadership, personal, and employability skills

A complete Service Learning Experience Includes:

  • Preparation: objectives are set for skills to be learned or issues to be considered
  • Action: perform the volunteer service
  • Reflection: reflect on the service experience through a variety of activities
  • Evaluation: evaluate the experience

Reflection provides opportunity to:

  • Process the experience and what we've learned from it
  • Inspire long-term commitment to service
  • Improve our service and move towards social change
  • Find creative long-term solutions to the problems we are addressing
