Who Are Today's Students?

Desiring to Make a Difference

  • In 1994, 68 percent of high-school students and 73 percent of college students performed some type of volunteer work. (Jimmy Long)
  • A rising share of high school seniors say "making a contribution to society" is "extremely" or "quite" important, while a declining share (though still a majority) say the same for "having lots of money." (Howe and Strauss, Millennials Rising)

Longing for Relationships

  • I'm homesick for the home I've never had (Soul Asylum)
  • We would share and listen and support and welcome… this is my utopia this is my ideal (Alanis Morissette)

Spiritual Searching Outside of Organized Religion

  • A majority of today's young adults are aware of having spiritual needs, yet they experience barriers to being involved in traditional religious communities. This leaves many with few options for exploring their spiritual lives. We engage these needs by creating safe places where students from a diversity of faith and non-religious backgrounds discuss the questions and issues that concern them. The majority of students involved do not identify with a particular faith -- often this is their first experience of being part of a community that actively supports them in their spiritual journey.
  • Of teenagers, only 10% say that they place a high value on religious involvement while 60% explicitly acknowledge that they have spiritual needs. (Reginald Bibby)

Setting their Course for Life:

  • University is a time when young people are sifting through the values they were raised with and setting a course for life.
