Community Volunteer Action

Every day in Hamilton children go to school hungry, people line up at soup kitchens, youth and children need help to succeed in school, and adults with disabilities are in need of assistance. Student Open Circles mobilizes weekly teams of McMaster University students to be hands that provide food or assistance, minds that teach, and hearts that care.

Commununity  Volunteer Action is a Service Learning program that:

  • Recruits and trains 30 teams of weekly at children's breakfast programs, aftershool clubs, homework help centres, shelters, and programs for people living with disability throughout Hamilton
  • Encourages volunteers to learn and grow from their service by facilitating group reflection each time they volunteer
  • Provides training and leadership development opportunities for students
  • Organizes educational and awareness raising events for volunteers and the McMaster community

Funding for this project is provided by the Hamilton Community Foundation, United Way of Burlington and Greater Hamilton, and the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Community Volunteer Action is recognized and supported as a working group of the Ontario Public Interest Research Group.
